A flat lightly bushed landscape at the base of the view showing Mataura, with a map above showing the course of the Waihopai River, Southland, and its passage out to sea, through the site of modern Invercargill. The map predates the settlement of Invercargill, whose site was selected in 1856. Various places are named on the map, including Oterawa and Taurakitewaru Wood at the mouth of the Waihopai River, Arowenua Wood (i. e. Arowhenua), Waihopai Woods and Oteraumaka Wood, as well as Pitokaika and Taurakarakauaraihe, both small areas of bush. Omaui Hill is shown to the South East, close to the sea.
