"What would you like on your toast?" "Marmite." 26 March, 2008
Reference Number: DCDL-0005911
Shows a mother bear giving her baby bear marmite on his toast because he is reading about 'toxic honey' in the newspaper. Refers to the poisoning of a number of people in the Coromandel area over the Easter weekend, 2008, after eating toxic honey. Toxic honey is produced as a result of bees feeding on tutu (Coriaria arborea) bushes. Toxic honey is not produced by bees visiting the flowers of tutu to gather nectar or pollen, but rather when bees gather honeydew produced by the sap sucking vine hopper insect (Scolypopa sp) feeding on tutu plants.
