Two men are rowing and two other people are holding oars; one a man in European clothes standing near the prow of the waka on the left, the other a woman with a child strapped to her back, standing at the stern on the right. In the background across the water is the steep site of Kahouwera Pa, on the southern shore of the Bay of Islands. Kahouwera Pa was viewed by Duperrey and his crew on 9 April 1824
