Historical Notes: The Waitara was built by Reed of Glasgow in 1863 and made eight voyages to New Zealand for the New Zealand Shipping Company between the years 1874-1882, before she was sunk by the Hurunui in 1883. (Information from 'White wings: fifty years of sail in the New Zealand trade 1850-1900, Vol I, by Henry Brett, 1924).
