Bates, Henry Stratton, b. 1836 :Native house in the Pa Tane-nui-a-Rangi 1858

A chief's house, with a verandah door and window, a carved tekoteko at the top of the barge boards. Three women are seated on the verandah, two of them smoking pipes. Another woman is seated to the right of the house, her hands in a basin, possibly preparing food. Two other smaller houses are visible in front of the palisades in the background. A fire, a cooking pot and a pig are also present.
