Historical Notes: The Colombo Plan for Co-operative Economic Development in South and South-East Asia was launched in 1950. Initially the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand were the non-Asian members of the plan until the United States joined in 1951. The part that these countries were to play was to provide the Asian members with financial and technical assistance to help them carry out their development programmes.
