Historical Notes: Algernon Charles Gifford was an astronomer and mathematician who taught at Wellington College. Through his interest the first college observatory was built in 1912. In 1924 the observatory was demolished to make way for Wellington East Girls' College, and rebuilt the same year on its present site.
