A Maori waka on the river, looking across to hills, and a niu pole rising above a fenceline on the opposite bank. The pole is almost certainly 'Kemp's Pole', raised by Te Rangihiwinui Kepa (Major Kemp) to show the boundary of a trust area he wanted reserved as Maori land.
