Soldiers from a Wellington Regiment sit eating a meal out of mess tins in the French town of Solesmes during World War I. They use broken pieces of masonry as seats and tables. Photograph taken 9 November 1918 by Henry Armytage Sanders.

Historical Notes: In contrast to the date (9 November) in the official photograph albums, the history of the Wellington Regiment by Cunningham, Treadwell, and Hanna (see page 392, paragraph two) recordes the first two Wellington battalions leaving Villereau for Solesmes on the afternoon of 10 November 1918.
