Fox, William 1812-1893 :[Maori on shore watching a canoe beach. Kits of food beside the group. Between 1852 and 1860]

The palisades of a pa to the left, a group of six Maori men (one holding a taiaha), women and children, with a baby, left centre, by a beach. In the foreground are two kete full of potatoes or kumara. A canoe with four occupants is close to shore, attached by a rope to a stone, and either leaving or arriving. A further canoe is visible in the background as are several whare. The settlement is on a narrow strip of land between the sea and the hills in the background.
