Domett, Alfred 1811-1887 :Scene up the Wairoa, at the junction of its two branches. South Waimea, Nelson / A. D. March 1st 1844

A European and two Maori men, all with staffs, poised on the edge of a cluster of rocks, looking down into the division of two rivers below them. The river junction has steep sides and is surrounded by rocks, trees and hills on both sides. Possibly a self-portrait, representing the first European visit to this area.
