Inscriptions: Inscribed - Mount recto - bottom left: Shackleton's rescue of the men from the Endurance on Elephant Island on his fourth attempt to reach them with inadequate vessels greatly impressed the South Americans who themselves assisted generously in this work. This and the goodwill mission to them on which the British Government sent him immediately after the relief of the Ross Sea party greatly influenced public opinion in these countries in favour of the Allied cause in World War I.
