Russian Press Conference. "I haven't time to give you more detail today." "This is what the gas looks like." 31 October, 2006.
Reference Number: DCDL-0001498
A military man stands at the podium at a Russian Press Conference saying that has no time to give more detail at the moment. Beside him is a huge board that is supposed to be illustrating the appearance of a gas. The board is empty. The cartoon probably refers to the Moscow theatre hostage crisis. On October 23, 2002 a crowded Moscow theatre was seized by armed Chechen men and women who claimed allegiance to the separatist movement in Chechnya. They took over 900 hostages and demanded the withdrawal of Russian forces from Chechnya. After a siege of two and a half days, Russian Spetsnaz ("special forces") raided the building with the assistance of an unidentified "knockout gas". All of the 42 terrorists were killed, along with 130 of the hostages, with no Spetsnaz casualties.
