Tremain, Garrick, 1941- :"Mum, is that the smoke that means there's a new Pope?" Otago Daily Times, 20 April 2005.
Reference Number: DX-022-228
The scene shows a small boy with his mother walking past the Beehive, the executive wing of New Zealand's Parliament from the top of which smoke is pouring. The question refers to the fact that a smoke signal rises from the Vatican when the Papal Conclave selects a new Pope and Pope Benedictus XVI was elected in May 2005. The response refers to John Tamihere's being deprived of his portfolios after making a series of very offensive remarks against a number of his colleagues. The remarks were recorded while John Tamihere was eating lunch with journalist Ian Wishart
