Historical Notes: The Ngati Toa pa "Taupo" was probably built and occupied before the Wairau Affair of 1843, where a number of Ngati Toa and Europeans (armed constabulary) were killed in an armed encounter. However, it was'nt until after that incident that large numbers of Ngati Toa returned from the South Island for fear of reprisal attacks from settlers to re-populate the Wellington-Porirua-Kapiti disricts in large numbers again. This pa is mainly associated with Te Hiko-o-te-Rangi, a paramount chief of Ngati Toa, and his uncle Te Rauparaha.
