Historical Notes: This is probably a portrait of Matilda Waley (nee Matilda Salomons) who was the wife of Jacob Waley, mathematician, lawyer, first President of the Anglo-Jewish Association, and a founder of the United Synagogue to which the Wellington Hebrew Congregation became, and remains, affiliated. Matilda was the niece of Sir Moses Montefiore and of Sir David Salomons who was the first Jewish Lord Mayor of London.
