Historical Notes: Te Rangihiroa, the younger brother of Te Pehi Kupe, died at Kapiti (either Motungarara or Waiorua) in 1842. He was afterwards buried at Waiorua. About the year 1877 Wi Parata (a grandson of Te Rangihiroa) built a wooden fence around the site to protect it from roaming stock.
