Shows the Exchange, Reading Room and Town Hall building on the waterfront in Te Aro, with Ridgway's Wharf running out of the picture to the left. In the distance beyond is Rhodes' Wharf and Te Aro Pa. Messrs Simmonds & Hoggard's Mill is shown in the distance on the lower slopes of Mount Victoria. A boat hull is lying on land beside the Exchange building at the right. In the centre foreground two men converse beside a large anchor, and another walks away. At the extreme right two Maori sit talking.
