Shows a group of Maori gathered informally around a camp fire on which they are cooking food. One man in a peaked cap and blue jacket squats in the centre watching the fire whose smoke drifts off to the left. Beside him is a kete possibly containing dry foliage to stoke the fire, and a bundle of blankets. At the left an old woman holds a small plucked bird on a stick over the fire, while a child and a dog sit beside her. Behind the squatting man is a seated woman perhaps nursing a child, and a man carrying a child on his back. At the right is a group of three figures in Maori cloaks and European hatseft group is a raupo hut with two woven kete hanging from roof poles. The background shows a figure on a path leaing away up a small hill, with further hills in the distance.
