Historical Notes: Originally ordered as an Enterprise-class nuclear carrier. Rising costs caused the ship to be reordered as a conventionally powered Kitty Hawk-class carrier. Construction began on 1 January 1961 at Newport News, Virginia by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Corp. Launched 1 February 1964. Scuttled on 14 May 2005 off the North Carolina Coast (info - Wikipedia).
