Historical Notes: This image was published in " The New Zealanders in Sinai and Palestine," Lieutenant-Colonel C Guy Powles, Whitcome and Tombs, 1922, p 22. Its context in the book indicates that it was taken in May 1916 after the army had crossed the Suez Canal into the Egyptian desert, but before any real fighting took place. The name "McKay" is written on the back of the original print, and this may be the Corporal Mckay who is among those acknowledged at the end of the book, particulary for lending photographs to the author.
