Historical Notes: The diary of Wynne Albert Bankes, who served on HMS Iris in the South Pacific, records that on 22 March 1859 he went "with Paymaster Moresby and Chaplain Campbell to take photographs up the Nerangai (sic) Gorge, beautiful scenery". The diary is held in the Dorset Country Records Office. PA1-f-019-36, taken on the same occasion, has the date "22 Mch 1859" inscribed on the image.
