Historical Notes: Lieutenant Leonard died at Camp Te Papa, Tauranga on 4 August 1864. The photograph, probably taken in Britain before he came to New Zealand, shows him while he was an officer in the 65th Regiment. He transferred to the 2nd Battalion, 18th (Royal Irish) Regiment on 8 January 1864.
