Photograph of Joe Perano Senior standing with one of his men, Arthur Heberly, on the tongue of a right whale at Tipi Bay, Cook Strait, in 1918. Shows the whale's baleen, with its matted hairy fibres, hanging down either side of the whale's mouth above the shoulders of the men. The Tipi Bay factory is behind. Photographer unidentified.
