Head and shoulders portrait of Te Kuka, of the Ngaiterangi tribe, described on the verso as a wood carver of repute; his tattooing may have begin on 1800. The sitter is said to have had "an uncommon mark on centre of the nose".

Historical Notes: Robley notes on the back of the painting that a number of Maori were present at Matapihi and were astonished at the accurate rendering of Te Kuha's tattoos.
