Historical Notes: "Wf" Class 501 steam locomotive was built in 1904, purchased by the Public Works Department, and taken over by NZR in 1909 on completion of the North Island Main Trunk Railway. See "Cavalcade of New Zealand locomotives" by A N Palmer & W W Stewart (1965, p 82)
