Historical Notes: "G" 55 was built by Black, Hawthorn & Co. (maker's no. 278/73), went into service in January 1875, and was sold in 1915 to the Kaitangata Railway and Coal Company. See "Register of New Zealand Railways steam locomotives, 1863-1971" by W G Lloyd, 1974, p42., and "Cavalcade of New Zealand locomotives" by A N Palmer and W W Stewart (1965, p 32). This image is reproduced in Lloyd's "Register ..." on page 111, with the inscription "G 55 (Black Hawthorn 278 of 1873) in Hillside workshops while owned by the N.Z. Oil and Coal Co., Kaitangata. S.A. Rockliff Collection".
