Original Evening Post caption reads: "Preparing for the pomp and tradition of the opening of Parliament today are the Sergeant-at-arms, Wing Commander R M McKay (left), and the Speaker of the House (Mr Whitehead). They are holding the impressive golden mace which the Sergeant-at-arms lays on the table of the House before a sitting commences to indicate that the Speaker is in charge". Photograph taken 25 March 1975 by an unidentified Evening Post staff photographer.
