Historical Notes: Forty "J" class steam locomotives were built in 1939 by the North British Locomotive Company, Glasgow, and all were in NZ by early 1940. Ten went to the South Island for service between Oamaru and Invercargill. See "Cavalcade of New Zealand locomotives" by A N Palmer & W W Stewart (1965, p 119)
