Historical Notes: "Ed" 101 was built in England, and sent to New Zealand as a prototype for seven more which were to be built in NZ, for use on the Wellington to Paekakariki line. This locomotive was distinguished by a skirt which concealed the wheels, and by three bands of aluminium alloy around the body. The NZ-built locomotives did not have the skirt, which was later removed from "Ed" 101. See "Cavalcade of New Zealand locomotives" by A N Palmer and W W Stewart (1965, p 130).
