Historical Notes: Originally No 4. on the Wellington and Manawatu Railway, "Wh" class no. 449 steam locomotive was built by Manning Wardle (Maker's no. 923/84). When the line was purchased by New Zealand Railways it was renumbered "Wh" 449. Written off in August 1914. See "Register of New Zealand Railways steam locomotives, 1863-1971" by W G Lloyd, and "Cavalcade of New Zealand locomotives" by A N Palmer and W W Stewart.
