A silver New Zealand Cross suspended on a purple ribbon. The obverse shows gold stars and a gold wreath around the central circular boss, a gold crown on the upright arm of the cross, and gold laurel leaves on the bar to which the ribbon was sewn.The reverse is inscribed: "Lieut Gilbert Mair, Rotorua 1870, N.Z.M."
