Historical Notes: The "Aa" locomotives were built in 1914 by Baldwin Locomotive Workshops, Philadelphia, and went into service in June 1915. See "Register of New Zealand Railways steam locomotives, 1863-1971" by W G Lloyd, and "Cavalcade of New Zealand locomotives" by A N Palmer & W W Stewart.
