Historical Notes: NZR "D" class 197 was built by Neilson & Co., Glasgow (maker's no 1844/74), went into service on 5 April 1879 and was written off in 1916. See "Register of New Zealand Railways steam locomotives, 1863-1971" by W G Lloyd, p 53. A note in Godber Album vol 108, page 75, says "First rail motor train".
