Historical Notes: One of three 1877 Avonside 2-4-0T "L"s which were converted to the 4-4-0T wheel arrangement. Converted at Petone Railway Workshops and was virtually a new locomotive. This was the first alteration. In 1901-1902 all three "La"s were rebuilt as 4-4-2Ts with larger tanks and bunker. See 'Cavalcade of New Zealand locomotives" by A N Palmer & W W Stewart (P 61).
