Exhibition and book captions read - This was possibly the first cartoon on the subject of [Australian] federation. At a time when Victoria was combating recession with a wall of tariff protection, Gavan Duffy, one of the state's radical politicians, was promoting political union for the seven Australasian colonies [including New Zealand]. The venerable English Punch magazine had a number of copyright-ignoring imitators in Australia and New Zealand.
