An unfinished work showing a group of Maori and Pakeha standing around a table in the open air, part of a tent sketched in to the left, behind the group. One man is signing the document, watched by two Pakeha men in uniform (William Hobson and somebody else), a third Pakeha man, probably Henry Williams, is in clerical garb with two further Pakeha men in the background. Eleven Maori are seated in the foreground, and nine more are standing around the table. To the right a pohutukawa tree is in flower and the Bay of Islands with a ship at anchor can be seen in the background.
