John Ballance on his knees in a garden, a disappointed look on his face. He is holding a butterfly net with a handle marked Experience and a net marked Ability. Beside him are flowers marked Past experience. A large butterfly marked Wanganui is flying away from him and in the background is a shop marked W. H. Watt, General Merchant. Ballance was defeated in the Wanganui seat in the elections of late 1881 by W. H. Watt.
