The Port Chalmers Volunteer Fire Brigade, with horse-drawn carriage towing two wheeled hose reels. Three firemen in uniform, with various bystanders. View looking up George Street includes, on the left, the Bank of New Zealand building; P Hercus, tailor; and J. Watson, tailor & clothier. Beginning of Grey Street on left. Photographed probably between ca 1880 and 1884, by David Alexander De Maus. Dated from directories which list P Hercus, and J Watson, both in George Street at the same time. See Mills, Dick & Co's Otago Provincial Almanac & Directory, 1880; and Stone's Dunedin & Suburban Directory (1884). P Hercus is not listed after 1884.
