Historical Notes: X 439 was built as a four-cylinder compound by New Zealand Railways at Addington (maker's no 94/08) for use in the freight and passenger service between Taihape and Taumarunui, and went into service on 9 January 1909. It was altered to a four-cylinder simple expansion engine in 1949 and was written off in 1957. Information from the "Register of New Zealand Steam Locomotives 1863-1971" by W G Lloyd, 1974.)
