Abbot, John, 1751-1840 :Bay moth. [ca 1816-1818]

Two pale brown moths in flight, shown with pupa and caterpillar. According to artist's notes `Feeds on the Gordonia lasianthus and other bays, folds itself in the leaves. Spun up to the side of the box 24th June, bred 6th July. Is common in Bay galls, or low bay woods'. (a gall is a bare spot in a coppice)
