Historical Notes: In 1869 Horonuku joined Te Kooti after the latter had left the Urewera country. After the defeat at Te Porere on 4 October 1869, Horonuku was forced to surrender to Government forces and was sent to live in Napier. Later he and his family stayed at Pakowhai with Karaitiana Takamoana, before returning to Taupo in 1870.
