Abbot, John, 1751-1840 :Great red underwing. [Between 1816 and 1818]

A double winged moth in flight with light brown decorated wings on top of red and black wings, shown with pupa and caterpillar on an oak in leaf. According to artist's note `Feeds on oak, is frequent on the Lombardy poplar in Savannah. Is vulgarly thought to be poisoness. Spun up 11th May, bred 13th June. This species frequents the lower parts of the country.'.
