Historical Notes: HMS Espiegle undertook a number of cruises in Melanesia, Micronesia, Western Polynesia and New Guinea in the period 1882-1885. Members of the crew received instruction from John Paine of Sydney, Australia, in the use of photographic equipment, and took a number of photographs on the voyages.
