Historical Notes: A description of this bridge 576 ft long and 21 ft wide on the Tamaki River which is navigable by vessels of considerable size' is printed in the Illustrated London News, 12 October 1867 - 'Swing bridge gives clear opening of 40 ft., made with abutment stones imported from Melbourne and ironwork from Sydney. Designed by W Weaver, engineer-in-chief of Auckland Province; contractors McNeil and Wilson. Cost 17,000 pounds. Built 1865'
