Historical Notes: The site shown was shortly afterwards settled by American missionary Seymour Mills Spencer, who established an English-style 'model village' Te Wairoa, from which tourists left to visit the Pink and White Terraces until their destruction in June 1886 in the eruption of Mount Tarawera.
