Historical Notes: See "Methodist Church, Nelson, 1842-1942" / Rev. M A Rugby Pratt, pages 10-11: "The brick church opened in 1845 had been severely damaged by earthquake. In August 1857, Mr W Beatson was requested to prepare plans for a new church to seat 400 persons. On 13th November of the same year, 400 pounds was paid for an acre in Hardy Street. ... The foundation stone was laid ... on 17th November, 1857 ..."
