The activities of passengers and crew aboard the Canterbury Association ship Duke of Portland. The drawings include: No. 1. 'Doctor' (Butcher). Take notice - on no account are you to peep behind this paper (on tissue paper, covering no. 2). Shows a butcher bleeding the hanging carcass of a cow. No. 2. An interior showing an eruption below and cascade above and the steps down which an 'Intermediate' was precipitated. Shows a leaking toilet built into steps and may refer to a practical joke played on a fellow passenger. No. 3, Hewitt, unusually grave. Shows a male passenger in cap and jacket, another man behind him in profile. No. 4. Sportsment on board. Albatross, mollymawks and Cape Pigeon rayther shy. Shows three men on board with guns waiting to shoot passing birds, with no success. No. 5. Probably Miss J. Palmer. Shows a seated view of a woman, wearing a bonnet. No. 6. Sketch under bulwarks. Humphries, Hayre. Copeland. Mrs Wood & daughter. Poor old Wood, since dead and buried at sea. Shows portraits of the 6 named people. No. 7'Dick' (a portrait of a man). No. 8. Splicing (a man splicing two lengths of rope). No. 9. Dick at wheel (a sailor at the wheel). No. 10. Captain. How's her head? Luff, man, luff'. No. 11. Jack. Mattison at wheel. (two sketches of one man, another of a second man in profile). No. 12. Hooper (a man seated on a crate).
