Lodge, Nevile Sidney 1918-1989:The loneliness of the long distance runner. Evening Post. 16 May 1980.
Reference Number: A-349-071
A marathon runner wearing a black singlet labelled 'NZ Olympic Team' is running along a stoney path over mountains and is passing a signpost 'Moscow - 15000 km'. In the distance loom black buildings with the inscriptions 'No special leave for State servants' and 'No Embassy support'. The New Zealand Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association had decided to send a team to the 1980 Olympics in Moscow while the New Zealand Government refused to provide any official support in protest against Soviet Russia's invasion of Afghanistan to prop up a puppet government there.
