Historical Notes: John Atkinson was an English architect, builder and stonemason, who retired to Frindsbury in Kent. His wife was Elizabeth Atkinson, nee Smith. He never came to New Zealand, but six of his children settled in New Zealand, including Premier Harry Atkinson. He was referred to as "The Governor" by his family.
